The Process
I was asked recently what made Servant Rosaries different than any other rosary.
Rosary beads are essentially a means of tracking or "counting" a sequence of prayers. In and of themselves, they have no innate power, but used devotionally they symbolize centuries of belief woven into life's joy and tragedies. When I hold a rosary and the beads slide through my fingers I am flooded with images of faith and tradition; I hear the cadence of Ave's repeated throughout history, contracting and expanding like a collective pulse.
Servant Rosaries are specifically designed as a means of intercession for people whose lives are affected by cancer. They are created in memory of a woman whose life was grounded in prayer and whose death consequently moved and inspired me beyond words. Something of that experience lives in these beads. They are saturated with the conviction that God is faithful . that He is in fact "with us" in all things, under all circumstances, and at every moment of life . that He is working for the good of those who love Him even at times of great trial and darkness. When people finger these beads I want them to know that they are not alone, that they are part of the mystical body of Christ and as such that the prayers of the universal church, both here and in heaven, are with them.
Servant Rosaries are made individually, by hand with profound respect for the traditions of our faith. When I make a rosary, the process itself becomes a prayer. As it is made, I pray for the person who will receive it; I pray that it will be a source of hope, grace, comfort, healing and strength. I pray that Our Lady will cover the recipient in her mantle of love and protection and lead him/her to the heart of her Son.
