What is a Rosary?
Simply stated, Rosaries are "beads" which are strung in a particular pattern to keep track of a repetitive sequence of prayers: 1-Our Father, 10-Hail Mary's, and 1-Glory Be to God (the grouping of the Our Father, Hail Mary's, and Glory Be is also known as a decade). The sequence is repeated 5 times - therefore, there are five "decades" in each rosary. What distinguishes the rosary from other forms of prayer is that, along with the "vocal" prayers, it includes a series of meditations.
Each decade of the Rosary is said while meditating on one of the principal events or "mysteries" in the life of Jesus. The Rosary is also a plea for assistance from Mary, the Mother of Jesus and is therefore known as a Marian devotion.
The Rosary has been used traditionally to pray for the needs of our country, for peace in the world, for healing, for personal intentions, etc. It is a very powerful tool when prayed meditatively.
